As we know, the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
were unanimously adopted by all 193 United Nations member countries at the United Nations
Sustainable Development Summit held last September. We firmly believe that local authorities and cities
are pivotal players to achieve these goals.
Experience with the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has shown that cities
and local governments played a key role by cooperating with a variety of related stakeholders. At the same
time, various obstacles still exist. Including a lack of capabilities, finance, governance, and technology, which
affect the majority of local governments in developing countries. Therefore, there is a need for local
governments to be more effectively supported and empowered to carry out its mandate and
responsibilities, the importance of broad-based partnerships, and the need to enhance the information base.
To this end, the Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG), the United Nations Economic and Social
Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and CityNet (The Regional Network of Local Authorities for the Management of Human
Settlements) are co-hosting the “International Forum on Urban Policy for the Sustainable Development Goals” which will be taking place from 8 to 10 June 2016, Seoul, Republic of Korea.
The main objectives of the Forum are: first, to share best practices on urban policy, and map out current initiatives for the future sustainable-
oriented city. Second, to discuss major urban policy issues in depth (e.g. urban planning, transportation, water management, housing, climate
change and environment, safer cities, and e-government). Lastly, to present and discuss the on-line ‘Urban SDG Knowledge Platform’ to
support shared knowledge and city-to-city cooperation.
While the challenges related to the achievement of the SDGs are numerous, so are the opportunities and as the saying goes, ‘a dream you
dream together is reality’. We believe that our concerted effort to fulfill the vision of the SDGs will enable our dreams to come true, and we
would like to invite you to the Forum to join our valuable effort.
